Recently opened on February 9, 2018, and on display until May 27, 2018, at the Textile Museum (Museo del Tessuto) in Prato is Marie Antoinette: The Oscar-Winning Costumes of a Queen. The exhibition brings together more than 20 costumes worn in the 2006 film Marie Antoinette by American director Sofia Coppola. The costumes are on loan from Sartoria The One, the costume tailoring company in Rome that helped to create the pieces. The renowned costume designer Milena Canonero, who won the 2007 Oscar for Best Costume Design, created the all pieces on display at the museum.
The exhibition starts with a video installation dedicated to Marie Antoinette showing the most important moments in her life as well as important historical events happening in France at the time. The next room, the main section of the show, contains various costumes from the film along with detailed descriptions of late 18th century dresses. Besides the costumes at the end of the room, scenes from the film play in a loop, so the visitor can see the costumes as they were worn in the film.
The show is small, occupying only two rooms of the museum, yet the visitor is immersed in different styles of 18th-century dress. The exhibition provides in-depth wall texts both in Italian and English that inform the visitor about the life of Marie Antoinette and the fashion culture of an 18th-century socialite and Queen. On display is a wide range of different types of dresses that were worn in the movie, ranging from casual outfits to more extravagant ball gowns. This gives the visitor an understanding not only the importance but how much fashion varied during this time period.
The museum not only displays the dresses used in the film but also some of the suits worn by the male characters as well as the undergarments. Seeing the undergarments on display one begins to really understand how intricate and lavish the dress of this time period was. The movie was met with high praise for the depiction of royal excess, which can be seen in the costumes on display.
The exhibition is running concurrently with another show, on the ground floor of the museum, Whimsy and Reason: Elegance in Eighteenth-Century Europe. Together these shows work to offer the visitor a complete picture of the dress in the 1700s. Having these two shows run at the same time is an interesting comparison. Whimsy and Reason contains historical pieces, which the visitor must walk through in order to visit Marie Antoinette: The Oscar-Winning Costumes of a Queen, which is a contemporary interpretation of late 18th-century dress. Overall between these two exhibitions, the visitor gains a better understanding of dress in the 1700s.

Aperta il 9 Febbraio 2018 e visitabile fino al 27 Maggio 2018 al Museo del Tessuto di Prato, la mostra “Marie Antoinette: i costumi di una ragina da Oscar”, che presenta al pubblico più di venti abiti indossati nel film Marie Antoinette, diretto da Sofia Coppola.
I costumi esposti sono un prestito concesso dalla sartoria romana The One, che contribuì alla realizzazione dei pezzi disegnati dalla stilista Milena Canonero, che per questi vinse l’Oscar per i Miglior Costumi, nel 2007.
La mostra inizia con una video installazione dedicata appunto alla Regina e riproduce i momenti salienti della sua vita e gli eventi più significativi della Francia dell’epoca.
La sala successiva, la principale dell’intera esposizione, mette in mostra vari abiti del film accompagnati da dettagliate descrizioni della moda del tardo XVIII secolo. Dietro gli abiti, in loop, i visitatori possono ammirare brevi scene tratte dal film, dando così vita agli abiti bloccati sui manichini.
La mostra è piccola, occupa solamente due sale del museo, ma proietta il visitatore nell’universo della moda settecentesca, offrendo notizie dettagliate, attraverso didascalie in doppia lingua, italiano e inglese, sulla vita di Maria Antonietta e sulla cultura della moda di una regina e della suasocietà. Diversi i tipi di abiti in mostra, da quelli più casual a quelli da ballo più stravaganti, tutti però recuperati dalle scene del film. Questo permette al visitatore di comprendere la moda dell’epoca e constatarne la volubilità.
Il museo espone anche alcuni dei vestiti indossati dai personaggi maschili, così come i sotto-abiti. Osservando gli indumenti intimi in mostra si comincia a capire quanto fosse intricato e sontuoso il vestiario settecentesco.
Il film all’epoca venne accolto con immensa lode per la rappresentazione dello sfarzo e dell’eccesso reale, e queste caratteristiche si ritrovano pienamente negli abiti esposti per questa occasione.
La mostra si svolge in concomitanza con un’altra mostra, al piano terra del museo: Capriccio e Ragione: Eleganza nell’Europa del XVIII secolo. Insieme, queste mostre offrono al visitatore un quadro completo dell’abito del Settecento e, al contempo, rappresentano un interessante confronto. Capriccio e Ragione espone pezzi storici attraverso i quali il visitatore passa per visitare poi la mostra di Marie Antoinette. Complessivamente attraverso queste due mostre, il visitatore ottiene un’ottima consapevolezza dell’abito e della moda nel Settecento.
